Techniques taught: A student of this class can expect to learn creative and wax designs using colored wax on their gourd. This class will teach them how to use the Mini Gourd Topper (circular designs) as well as free hand designs. The class is fun and encourages individual imagination. By the end of the class the student can expect to have a "one of a kind" circular designed gourd that will be a showcase piece for any gourd artist to be proud of. Name of Class: Focus on Agates Class No# GC-11 Teacher: Sue Brogdon from Arizona Price: $65 Class level: Beginner to Intermediate Length of Class: 9:00 to 5:00 Supplies provided by Teacher: Instructor will provide cleaned and prepped medium-sized canteen gourd; surfacing materials (inks, gels, acrylic paints), spray paints, dyed and natural pygmy date palm, resin-encased agate, lashing materials, needle and beads to conceal drill holes. Supplies students should bring: Students should bring latex or plastic gloves, heat tool, pencil, cloth or plastic tape measure, drill/dremmel and 1/16" drill bit, dust mask, scissors and wire cutter, old towel, and a bucket. Description: In this workshop you will learn how to cast agates, fossils and other minerals in resin so that they can be laced to a gourd as a rim embellishment. A variety of surfacing materials will be available: water-based and alcohol inks, leather dye, and oil stiks- all colors that will compliment the Brazilian agate. Using natural or dyed pygmy date palm, you will lash the palm with sinew, waxed linen or upholstery thread. Beads or seeds will be added last to conceal the drill holes. Techniques Taught: Applying inks and alcohol inks to achieve special effects; encasing minerals in resin; dyeing dye plant material; and lashing multiple rows of plant material onto the rim of a gourd. Name of Class: African Doll "Kathy Has Gone Green" Class No# GC-13 Teacher: Kathy Riker from Oregon Class Price: $85 Class Level: All Levels Length of class: 9:00 to 5:00 Supplies provided by Teacher: Each student will receive instruction sheet with pictures. Students will have their choice of a constructed doll, all parts will be washed, cleaned, cut, sanded and stacked. This way students have more time on techniques and construction, decorating and embellishing and not cleaning, cutting and sanding. The doll body takes 9 gourds cut in different ways to make one body. This will be done for you as it is very time consuming. Kathy will go over how all the parts were cut and stacked. Students will wood burn simple designs on the dolls dress, pots and basket that she carries. Earth Safe finishes and Stewart Superior Inks to decorate their dolls. Etch designs with a carving bit and make holes to sew on some beads for a little extra bling and sparkle. Seal art work with clear satin Earth Safe Varnish. Have a choice of material to make dolls dress and head piece. Tons of fabric to choose from. Learn how to put the doll together and counter balance her to stand. Make a necklace out of beads for her to wear. Embellish her back with leather, fur, pots, baskets, sticks and lots of other goodies. Supplies students should bring: Students need to bring a wood burner, mask, apron, dremel with a small round carving bit and a #59 or #60 drill bit. Kathy will have drill bits and round caving bits for sale if you don't have them that small. If you don't have a dremel or rotary tool teacher will have one on hand for students to use. Choice of a cleaned and sanded gourd. Direction sheet with pictures to take home. Kathy will go over how to clean, cut and sand a gourd in class for any students that may not know how. Pattern for the mesas and the dancer and use press and seal to transfer patterns. Stewart Superior Inks. Pure Color and Gel Glaze and varnish from Earth Safe Finishes. Teacher will furnish all other supplies, gloves, paper plates, sand paper and pencils, cosmetic sponges, paper towels and acrylic sheets for the inks, felt squares and clips and micro brushes. Supplies students should bring: Their cutting saw, cleaning tool and a mask. A heat gun if they have one and an apron. A 3/4 or 1 inch flat wash or glaze brush. Class description: Everyone will enjoy making the Mesa Dancer. Students will learn how to apply the pattern for the Mesas and use press-n-seal for the dancer. Students will cut their Mesas with their saw and use the mini files and sand paper to smooth all the edges. We will be using two wood burners, students will burn the Mesas and the dancer with a chisel or spear pen and then use a decorative burner for more details and texture on the dress. Students will learn how to apply the inks with cosmetic sponges, micro brushes and paint brushes and blend with q-tips and felt. Students will learn how to mix and make custom colors and apply the Pure Colors. You'll never buy acrylic paint again when you see what you can do with the Pure Color. Students will learn how to make embellishing dots. Gourd will be sealed with a clear coat of Earth Safe Satin Varnish and a thin coat of glaze just to give it an iridescent effect. We will spray on a stone texture paint. The paint needs to dry overnight, so students will learn to accent the design with acrylic paint and to add a danish cord rim on a small, pre-prepared gourd. Techniques taught: This technique was taught to me by Linda Cancelliere of Pa. She has given her permission for me to teach this. It is a good project for beginners. We will cover painting techniques and a simple rim of danish cord. Will student leave with finished project? Students will leave with two gourds, one partially complete. Choose from four original patterns, Green Man, Celtic, Fruit Basket or a new Western design w/your choice of concho....or bring your own design ideas! Though you will have to finish burning and finishing your tambourine at home, it will be fully constructed in class. You will attach the jingles, embellish, hide the construction process and play your instrument. Some coloring materials are provided as time allows. Name of Class: Pine Needle Couching Class No# GC-42 Teacher: Sue Brogdon from Arizona Price: $70 Class level: Beginner to Intermediate Length of Class: 9:00 to 5:00 Supplies provided by Teacher: Instructor will provide: cleaned canteen gourd, finishes, spray paints, dyed pine needles, lashing materials, and beads to conceal drill holes (if desired) Supplies students should bring: Students should bring a micro-saw, gourd cleaner (for the inside), drill or Dremel with a 1/16" drill bit, dust mask or respirator, pencil, cloth or plastic tape measure, compass, latex gloves, old towel, bucket, and a scissors. Description: Metallic finishes are now extremely popular and many different media can be combined to create interesting finishes. This custom-designed finish featuring alcohol inks, glazes and acrylic paints makes a stunning statement when enhanced with dyed black pine needles. Instructor will share design ideas for creating a couching pattern on the body of a canteen gourd and then students will select one for their project. Students can choose a turquoise, magenta, lettuce or a red finish. Dyed black pine needles will be lashed with artificial sinew. Instructor will also demonstrate how to line the inside of the gourd with Japanese handmade paper to conceal all the lashing. Techniques Taught: designing a geometric shape for the couching pattern; applying alcohol inks and other products to achieve a metallic finish; dying plant material; coiling with pine needles using a gage and focusing on starting and ending the work; and lining a gourd with handmade paper. This way students have more time on techniques and embellishing and we keep our space clean. Students will receive a direction sheet with pictures to take home. Kathy will go over how to clean, cut and sand a gourd in class for any students that may not know how. Students will use Leather dyes to color the gourd. Kathy has been using Earth Friendly products and we will seal our gourd with a "GREEN" product. We will use a Protecting Wax from Earth Safe Finishes. This product is safe for the artist and the earth. Products are non-toxic, ECO safe, water based with little to NO VOC's. Supplies students should bring: Students need to bring a heat gun if they have one Kathy will have a few in class for students to use if you don't have one. Bring an apron and mask. Class Description: Students will learn this very old technique of wax resist. Will have a cleaned and prepared gourd to work on. They will learn how to use the kitska, bee's wax and candle to create wax patterns on their gourd. Students will then fill in the wax patterns with leather dye. When the wax is melted off it will create the illusion of African Mud Cloth. Students can embellish their project with sea grass, shells and beads. Each student's piece will be a one of a kind! Supplies students should bring: Students need to bring a heat gun if they have one and a #8 or #10 flat paint brush to class. Class description: This class is quick and easy and will surprise you! Class will be relaxing with no stress no notes to take and just plain fun from the get go. Kathy will really surprise you with a brand new technique that she has not seen in the 10 years of her teaching and it's so easy & inexpensive and you will laugh when we see what this magical paper is.! We all have at least one if not more hidden in a box or closet in our homes. Students will be able to choose a stamp from a variety of stamps. Kathy will have other themed stamps and papers if a dragon fly and Asian theme is not your favorite. We will be stamping on a very special paper and then adhering the paper to the gourd. We will add color with inks and use gold foils to finish the rim and any little touches you may want to put on you stamped designs. We will finish the gourd with a clear coat of Earth Safe Varnish. Name of Class: Sea Grass Enhancements On Gourds Class No# GC-55 Teacher: Sue Brogdon from Arizona Price: $65 Class level: Beginner to Intermediate Length of Class: 9:00 to 4:00 Supplies provided by Teacher: Instructor will provide a cleaned medium-sized round gourd; surfacing materials (inks, gels, acrylic paints), spray paints, dyed and natural sea grass, lashing materials, needle and beads to conceal drill holes. Supplies students should bring: Students should bring pencil, latex or plastic gloves, heat tool, cloth or plastic tape measure, micro saw, drill/dremmel and 1/16" drill bit, metal file, dust mask, old towel, bucket, lunch and a beverage. Description: Sea grass can be utilized for lashing onto the rim of a gourd, adding a couching detail to the body of a gourd, or woven through a cut out portion to create a basket weave pattern. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to learn all three techniques. Gourds will be finished with inks, alcohol inks, or oil stiks - colors that will compliment both dyed and natural sea grass. Instructor will also share recipe for dying plant material and making clay embellishments. Techniques Taught: designing the basket weave and couching patterns; tips for quickly cutting out the pattern; applying inks and alcohol inks; dyeing plant material; how to weave, cough and lash with the sea grass.; making clay embellishments Will student leave with finished project?
