The Artistry of Shari Morley

I am a retired first grade teacher from Anchorage, Alaska. We returned to Moses Lake in 1999. We bought 1.2 acres next to my sister and brother-in law's farm. First I taught myself to wood carve. Then I bought a gourd in Hawaii. I intended to wood burn it, but had no idea how to start. I went to a wood carving show in Pasco and a lady named Billie taught me to wood burn carve and paint in five minutes. I was hooked.

I came home and planted seeds like crazy. It was too late and I didn't get any gourds that year. But the next year I was "cooking". I grow them both on trellises and on the ground. It gives me a horrible backache to to try to hand pollinate so I just get what I get. My favorite shape is the pear gourd (Martin Gourd). I like to make sculptures with my gourds. I am also a water color artist, so I usually use water color when I paint my gourds.

We live seven miles from Moses Lake. I have five dogs; two Jack Russell's, a mini schnauzer, a retriever, and a toy fox terrier by default. These fill my need to be around children. My husband is a retired auto mechanics teacher and helps with the alfalfa and wheat harvest and equipment maintenance on my brother-in-law's farm a mile to the east of us. We have two adopted grown children. Our daughter lives in Anchorage and Our son lives in Maryland.
