The Journey of the Traveling Gourd

RAFFLE TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE FOR THE TRAVELING GOURD!

The Gourd itself is 14” diameter with a circumference of almost 40” and is roughly 15” tall. It is larger than the average size gourd most gourd artist usually works on.

When the Traveling Gourd is complete it will exhibit the art of all 12 officers and directors of the Washington State Gourd Society.  Each WSGS Officer is putting their own artistic touch to one of the twelve panels on the gourd. In next few months, the gourd will be "traveling" around the state as it is still being worked on by different officers. We will take pictures as each Officer completes their panel and post those pictures on the WSGS Website       WSGS Traveling Gourd Ad

Tickets are a $1.00 a piece or 6 for $5.00

The winner of the traveling gourd will be announced at our FALL Meeting. Purchase tickets from any board member by sending a check directly to them and they will mail you back your tickets ~or~ purchase them at the bi-annual Spring Meeting. If you buy a ticket please put your name and phone number on the back of the corresponding ticket. You need not be present to win.

The first person to add their artistry is Myrna Grigsby, she added color to the very bottom and adorned the top, so being president she has this covered from top to bottom.

Evie Scribner has added a really nice underwater scene utilizing the natural molting of the gourd as part of the water with a colorful trout chasing a fly.

I was able to find an area I could do the "Vision Gourd" Inspiration from the gourds markings.  I found some rocks on the gourd, I outlined them, and it had a place to put a lighthouse.  Then I added 5 whales and two Eagles and 3 Cabins and some trees. It is wood burned and etched with a light wash of acrylic for contrast in the beak, head and tail feathers.

I finished it with 3 brushed on coats of RustOleum's "Varathane" Interior Diamond Polyurethane "Satin" www.Varathane.com  I used it because it does not darken the lighter meat of the gourd when I do the etching ( the water around the whales, Lighthouse beams, and head and tail of the Eagle). The rocks, and the smoke from the smallest cabin were all already on the gourd. I have a bunch of Mini Wax products but have not found one that leaves my light thin etching light -yet-.
